Sore feet

I'd say we've covered some good ground, wouldn't you? After so much observing and learning, we've decided to try some doing and learning at the Harambee center in Pasadena, CA. The little Christian school and community organization is striving to keep the rising housing prices from displacing the local population, helping families support themselves, and educating children in being self-sustaining by keeping gardens, chickens, bees, and working with the neighborhood community garden across the street. They're also trying to get the school self-sustaining and create jobs for parents by starting a catering business and bakery. Harambee's been around for over 30 years, but after some dormancy it seems to be an exciting time of resurgence. I wouldn't say that this place is necessarily better than others, just that it's a good place with good people... and about the time we got here it seemed about the time to stop for awhile. Harambee's director, who immediately became like family, has been kind enough to house us, and we're enjoying getting a feel for this unique neighborhood that is so out of place in Pasadena as a whole.

Meanwhile, the ongoing process of turning the "pie shop out of a VW bus" dream into reality continues...
